I am consistently dumbfounded by competent, good historians referring to aspects of British history before the coming of the Anglo-Saxons as ‘English’. This lazy inaccurate attitude shows a deeper ignorance of Welsh and other pre-English cultures of these islands. Bettany Andrews did so in Episode 3 of Seven Ages of Britain when discussing a 'torc' as an 'English' item. How can this be when the English had not begun settling in Britain? The 'torc' was a Celtic/British/Welsh item perhaps. All these descriptions are acceptable depending on your viewpoint. But how can 'British' historians like Andrews persistently ignore that the 'British' before the coming of the Romans were the 'Welsh'? Why can’t some British historians bear to bring themselves to say that the culture that existed in Britain before the Germanic invasion of the post-Roman era was basically ‘Welsh’?
