What has happened to NYWS. Hope it comes back soon with some great ideas. Some of the shows that have been shown of late are not as interesting as some from across the water.

I saw something interesting today. During one of the Discovery ad breaks this morning was a trailer featuring Tommy Walsh advertising a new Discovery channel, DISCOVERY SHED!! Was I dreaming or is it possible TPTB have finally got their act together at last? Of course, NYW might not feature....now wouldn't that be a surprise?

Discovery Shed seems very interesting, although it looks to me like a complete reinvention of the old structure of Discovery Home & Leisure. The only thing missing is New Yankee Workshop and This Old House... get Norm Abram and Bob Vila back on UK TV!

I've just bought my first house and have been wondering whether to subscribe to Sky, and I can't see a reason as the only thing I used to watch on Cable (at uni 2000-2003) was Norm's shows and some fishing. If they get Norm's Yankee Workshop and This Old House back onto Discovery Shed I'll subscribe to Sky... just to get that!

Edit: spelling correction

Hiya Duncan. I've also been a Norm fan for quite a while, before Real Time, DH&L etc. Entertaining, informative, knowledgeable. He's encouraged me indirectly to set up a small shed workshop with stuff to keep my brain active after some health/mobility issues (hip problems). When I saw the trailer for Shed, I rather thought Discovery would at last contain all those DIY-style programmes there. Wrong. As you say, it's just a re-branding of ReelTime, sorry Real Time, and no change. I thought at the very least Discovery would put all the fishing shows on a dedicated channel. I mean, just how much fishing can one do in a shed??

Sadly, I'm guessing the cost of purchasing new NYW shows is not within Discovery's budget, unless anyone knows different.

Please stop this terrible program, it's not worth watching it. It's a waste of time while there could have been a great documentary on.
Stop programs like Chop Shop, Ludolfs, OCC, Overhaulin and all the other "shows" where animals (re)build cars and bikes, and also these programs where idiots in front of the cameras show what they dare to do like Survivorman, One way out, and all these others.
Return to the good documentaries the way Discovery started.

PLEASE!!!!!

I have also been wondering where Norm has disappeared to. Has there ever been any official statement put out by Discovery as to the fate of our favourite woodworking show? I know from the NYW website that they are on the 20th season and had looked forward to the 9-show feature on kitchen furniture, but it has never been shown here. GRRR!!!
I do appreciate that they have shown home-grown shows on the channel, that don't rely on things such as dado blades in a table saw, as this is not allowed in our "wrapped in cotton wool" country, but it just isn't the same. We all wish we had a New Yankee Workshop in our back gardens, complete with a power tool for every occasion, but for some of us, watching the show is as close as we are going to get, so PLEASE, get it back in the schedules and I mean up to date, not just repeats!

Hear Hear!

Bring back Norm, I've tried a couple of home grown shows like Wood Wizard and they are truly awful. Norm's a skilled master craftsman and he inspires me to have a go myself. Surely the Discovery Channel can afford NYWS?

Hi There

I have lodged a formal request to the DCE Schedulers to kindly consider bringing back NYWS as its a firm favourite with all you users.

(Please be advised that I have continually done this for the past three years - however there might now be a glimmer of hope!! Fingers crossed.. will keep you posted)

Many thanks for your efforts. The only other way to see the 'new' shows would be to buy the DVDs direct from the US, something a few guys have already done with help from relations over there. Of course, not many will have access to that kind of assistance, so come on Discovery, what are you going to do about it?
