I watched the program with great interest but like you was a little disapointed with some of the statements. As we all know there are companies out there who will slap a panel on for that sort of figure. We have customers who spend similar figures in the trade, but as we all know it comes down to the quality of the job. As an advertising ploy it must have worked well for the body shop in question....possibly far better for them than for any of the other companies featured on there supplying goods or services!!
Its about time those that repair got wise, unless we all adapt and start taking on little jobs like these the small independant body shop will no longer exist. Insurance compaines are no longer gravy train, more private buyers are chosing to repair damaged cars them selves cutting out the middle man. The now open European borders will soon push many small body shops out....we have customer placing cars in some of the best Eastern Europe body shops with top on hourly rates of under £5 per hour.
Summing up, yes the program was floored in some areas. Lets hope they focus on something of much higher value, something that will show just what sorts of returns can be made...the big killings of £10k to £20k per vehicle. Repair time and pain costs the same on a Peugeot 106 as it does on a new Merceds AMG SL55... I know what I would be doing!
As a post script: It a shame that they didnt adress the running costs and depreciation of a properly repaired damaged vehicle. From our experiance we see people getting anything up to two years free motoring out of cars they repair
