I am an avid watcher of programmes on the Discovery channels and especially those to do with Railway’s. I feel the Railway programmes shown like ‘Trainspotting’ and ‘Off the Rails’ are quality and well worth viewing, but isn’t it time there was a ‘Discovery Rails’ channel on the same lines as ‘Discovery Wings’ There are plenty of quality programmes around, made by the BBC and independent producers, many probably from the same source as aircraft programmes shown. Programmes about Railway history, Motive power, Travelogues, Heritage Railways etc . Railway’s are a major interest in the UK, be it modern, heritage or modelling.
Heritage/Steam railways are a major growth tourist area in Britain with dozens of railways attracting visitors throughout the year. Its very much part of Britains heritage.
As I said, other area’s of transport are well catered for and I think it’s about time Railway’s had the same coverage as other means of transport

This would be an outstanding idea! The potential of all kinds of railway programs is huge. Anything from the mechanical side to the following of a support crew of a mainline engine, modern day traction and steam traction, the list goes on!!!!!!!!!

Excellent idea. Every week I eagerly look through the TV listings of all the Sky satellite channels for railway related programming. Alas they are few and far between. The interest in railways, be they full size or models, modern traction or steam, is vast. There are more than half a dozen monthly railway magazines and a similar number featuring railway modelling. Look in any railway modelling magazine and you'll find a dozen or more shows and swapmeets held across the UK every month. I would guess that every county in the UK has at least 1 preserved railway line whose continued operation relies entirely upon volunteers. These preserved lines attract loads of tourists and interested parties. People are interested in railways. If you include railways from around the world, which any good railway channel would, then I would find it hard to believe that there wasn't sufficient programming available to fill the schedule of a dedicated railway channel. So come on Discovery, make it happen.
PS Discovery Rails gets my vote for the title.

On the rails day 24/3/07 .... Mark Williams mentioned the "Duchess" class of locos as being the most powerful ever used in Britain. What about the "Fowler 9F" Locos such as the Morning Star, The Evening Star (Currently still running at the NRM York) and the Black Prince? weren't 2-10-0 Fowlers the most powerful even if they weren't the fastest?
Anyone know more?

Hi thought I would let you know of a pretty good railway channel the railway channel
It is updated daily and you should get your fix from there. I discovered it trying to find some modelling demos. (which is how I found here also incidently). I think the guy who made it did some of the discovery rail videos actually.

Anyway check it out.

peace be...
