When we first got cable TV, Discovery Channel was a station with interesting programs, with subjects like nature and technique.
Nowadays it's only programs where idiots (re)build cars or motorbikes. People who can't even talk normally to each other, people who can't talk at all. Or we have to watch programs in which some kind of lunatic has to show what he dares to do, survive in the middle of nowhere for a week. Did Discovery got new management, or what happened to the station? It is falling so deep, it's going from bad to worse. Soon, it's time to delete the channel from the favorites list in the TV so we can not watch it anymore. I wonder if there are more people like us who like the old Discovery Channel back, with really interesting programs AND without all these idiots in front of the camera. |

Agreed, I am on the verge of cancelling my subscription to Discovery. Watching Discovery used to make me feel like I had read a nice book, now it feels like I have just read some scabby tabloid newspaper.

I fully agree with you here. It's pure sensation what they offer nowadays. Yes, I will definitely erase the station from the TV memory and stop watching it.
I mean, who is staying home for programs like: Chop Shop, OCC, The Ludolfs, and all other programs where animals (re)build cars and motorbikes and Survivorman and identical programs where people in front of the camera's show what they dare to do. Well done. Good job. But not really. No, Discovery is finished. |

I could no agree more. It should be renamed Reality Channel. You forgot the worst shows however, the Ink series..
A media expert wrote an intersting column in a danish newspaper recently. He stated that the cost of television would increase drastically in the coming years. What the stations do is launc a really interesting channel. Once they get the cable companies to carry them, they fille the channel with useless stuff, create a new channel and start over. I can name several channels here that adhere to this tactic. I just wish Discovery is not one of them... |

I have to disagree, i enjoy watching some of the programs on discovery and find them informative. My favourite show by far is the Garage, it isnt boring and can be informative (like when they show the cut away and how it works clips)
Surely its a case of supply and demand too, if they got good audiences watching the (in my view) boring documentaries they may have stayed. But perhaps discovery is now trying different things to attract audiences in what is now a very competitive market seeing as the majority have digital tv now. At the end of the day, if you dont like whats on find another channel/program or read a book!! |

I don't know the garage but it sounds to me nr 13 of a series of program to fill a dozen.
The title sounds like it is about cars and as i just stated there are way too many programs with that subject already. All these American kind of shows. Maybe in the States they like this, but here on the main land people don't. In the States they still don't give a damn about nature and the environment. They still drive these way to big cars, pimp them to make them heavier, put in extra large engines as if gas is for free. Well, I have been there, gas is not for free over there. No, Discovery should be more interested in nature and how to preserve the earth instead of letting these animals who host those shows destroy it. |

I understand your view in a way, but the majority of the car programs shown via discovery are shown on the turbo channel - a channel specifically introduced to show motoring & mechanical related programs to people who have motoring & mechanical related interests. All the other discovery channels are still there history and others. Discovery are purely catering for everyones tastes rather than keeping their audiences few and far between. People are taking less interest in enviro docs because being environmentally friendly is being forced on them in other aspects - i.e green taxes, schemes in work, recycling, and all over the news. If discovery listened to you spamming the majority of the threads i have read today with cut and paste replies asking to cancel practically every program then they would be repeating the same old enviro docs that no-one wants to watch, losing funding - going bust - and shutting down. The Garage is a docu-soap based in a service/repair garage in spain and is produced by Endemol UK - If you visit their website it tells you that this program "became the channel's highest rating home grown series in its 17-year history" So if thats not a good enough reason to show a program like this, i dont know what is!!

Yes, I agree, there should be a variety of programs. But should it be like it is now? Isn't Discovery a documentary station? Then why broadcast all these terrible soaps? These reality programs?
Yes, our TV has an On/Off switch and we also do receive other stations (happily), but I had hoped Discovery really would be different. When you say most of the car programs are on the turbo channel then I have to disagree with you. We only receive the "normal" Discovery Channel braodcast and also there they have these horrible shows. What are they trying to prove? Does anybody know? Survivorman, Les Trout (if I spell his name right), One way out, let these people do what they like to do, but don't waste valuable air-time because they want to do all those things. All the car shows with the overhauling, the rebuilding, the building of American bikes and cars. Why do we have to watch it here in Europe? Put it on an American channel and let them have the "fun", but let us watch something interesting. In the mean time I have deleted Discovery from my TV's memory and I also wrote a letter to the cable company to ask to delete Discovery from the standard list of stations. This is no station for me. Let there be something else instead. |

Before, Discovery was an interesting channel. Nowadays it's like an MTV tempo motor channel mixed with lame reality shows... Sad to see this happen.

I totally agree.
I used to enjoy Discovery channel, it used to be informative and entertaining. These days however it's all reality soaps full of ego-tripping trash talking imbeciles. Discovery used to be about science, history, nature and travel... discoveries, isnt that why they called it "Discovery" in the first place? If they plan to continue with this sort of trash programming like they do now then at least rename the channel to reality-trash tv. |

I agree with everything exept that, what if you did get stuck in the middle of the desert? Infact even if i don't it's accually quite exiting to see what he will do next. Though he will eat raw meat it's just interesting to see how to survive in places like them, I just find it really exiting you might not but everyone has their oppinion. I agree with everything elce though. |

I totally agree with you. I think that TV program teaches us how to let ourselves to keep warm or find some foods to eat when you're alone at somewhere that noone can help you, what can you do to keep your live. I think it works and who knows when can we stay in that kind of situation? I dont like moto or cars too because I dont undertstand that stuff. But the people who understand those things will be interesting in watching that programmes. We can choose what u like and miss what u dislike. I'll keep watching discovery channel and ignore the programmes that i'm not interesting in. "The MythBusters" is one of the best program in Discovery channel.I believe there will have more meaningful programmes in the future. |

You have got to be kidding. Mythbusters???? Those stupid Americans who only blow up things: In case of doubt: C4! Discovery used to be a documentary station about interesting subjects. Now it is a reality show station with egotripping maniacs who like to see themselves on TV. People who dare to do things nobody is interesting in (like Steve Irving who finally met his match and who is dead now). I can only say: let all those maniacs be killed in their own program so there is at least something funny on TV. |

Mythbusters is great, it answers questions people have always been wondering so you could argue it is educational.
You can't actually say that someone is wrong about what they think is the best show because it's their OPINION and therefore is not wrong. That just makes you sound quite narrow minded. |

I was in this very same situation, I started an EdD. program and switched to a DBA program. My goal is to continue teaching at the college level but have the option of going into administration. I personally found that the theories that I am learning in business can be applied to just about any operations department whether it be the corporate world or the education world.

These motorbike and car shows just don't belong on Discovery. It's a good thing we have Discovery Science and Discovery World with proper stuff to compensate though
