Yesterday night I watched a documentary about Pastina Nkotki, who had an operation to remove a tumor on her face.

At the end of the programme it said that she had died 3 months later but didn't say why!!

Could anyone tell me what happened to her? Did she die because of the tumor, was it something completely un-related?

It was a very abrupt way to end a programme and I feel cheated! If anyone can help it would be great!

Hi
I just watched this programme with Pastina Ntoki, and I was so happy that this brave and courageous woman had survived to see her family and be accepted by them again. I too was really shocked and saddened to discover that she had died 3 months later. I too, am disappointed that the programme didn't offer any explanation as to what had happened to her, either on the programme or as an entry on this website. It worries me and whether intentional or not by the
programme makers, seems a little 'cold.' Did they not think that their viewers would care about Pastina's future welfare?
If anyone finds anything about what happened to her, I would be grateful if they could share this information.

Here's a message from the programme maker on Pastina's sad story:
"Pastina died a few months after surgery. She had a happy life working with her daughter, cultivating her plot of land and forming close relationships with her family and many of the villagers. She woke up feeling ill and died on the way to the hospital. Cause of death even after a post mortem is unconfirmed but there has been a suggestion it might have been from blood on the brain. Many women in Africa carry heavy loads on theirs heads – Pastina might have weakened her skull by doing this causing this tragedy."

As I sit here with tears streaming down my face, I too am glad that Pastina re-connected with her family/community. To me, that is the best that I can ask at this point. What angers me is not understandingg how, with such modern technology that we have in this world, there was nothing that could've been done to make her look more like a young woman? I highly doubt it. Says a lot, now don't it?

I too was sad that Pastina died. I think we should acknowledge her cousin (can't remember his name) for his heroic effort to save her life despite Pastina's immediate family. Women are so marginalized so many places--it is really encouraging to see a man defy custom to help a woman in need.

I, too was very disappointed at the lack of information about Pastina. I wept at her courage and faith in God to bring her through such a somplicated surgery. I also wept at the disappointment she felt when the operation did not yield the cosmetic results she had hoped for ( I wonder did this disappointment lead her to be depressed). Nevertheless, I am inspired and moved by her unwaivering faith and that of her cousin Boniface. They are true testaments of courage and tenacity.

I was also completely shocked to learn that Pastina had died, with no explanation given as to the cir****tances. I was kind of teary-eyed anyway, and then when I saw the tag at the end of the programme, I just burst into tears. And it seemed so callously presented. On another note, her cousin, Boniface, deserves a medal. What a decent, loving and kind person he is. I would like to know how Pastina's death affected his standing in the community. He wasn't on super good terms with them anyway for going against the wishes of her brothers. When Pastina came home after her surgery, they seemed to warm to him; but with her death, I wonder if their superstitions have gotten the best of them again. There is so much more to this story that I would like to know.

I saw the show and it was so unafair that after all that suffering , just when the light seemed about to shine on her life she died. When I read the brief sad tittle that she had died shortly after filming I was very sad too. There are many things that should keep a smile on our faces though, first we saw how other people lives were changed for the better because of her, second there are people that still care so much for a human being as it was shown by her cousin, and then there is this forum where hundreds were touched by the life of a stranger, hundreds for whom it was not just another tv show, it is you people that give this world HOPE.

I too, was so moved by Pastina's story and so warmed by her cousin Boniface's compassion AND courage. He was brave enough to denounce Pastina's brothers not caring for her and her mother as pathetic. Women, in that part of the world especially, need advocates and he was indeed that. It was a beautiful thing to see. I did a search on the web for her cause of death after seeing the program last night. Seeing that end tag shocked me like someone socked me in the gut. I am grateful to know what the likely cause of death was, since the program caused me to care about Pastina a great deal.

Hi Lahlahpo,
I may be traveling to Kenya in 2008. I have been there several times. I just want to let Boniface know how much he did for Pastina and how brave he is. I have friends now in Kenya hoping to find him.

i felt exactly the same way, shocked and moved by this extraordinary story of a strong human being. The end was quite sad as we were left with no reason as to how pastina died. She managed to survive this tremendous operation and then nothing. Please let us know as i felt the end was too abrupt.
My thoughts are with the family of Pastina.
Many thanks.
