Gandhi, Mandela, Irwin

Eight-year-old Bindi Irwin, in her trademark khaki duds and pigtails, joined one of the world's most exclusive clubs today when she delivered an address to the National Press Club in Washington DC.

Where Winston Churchill, Indira Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Boris Yeltsin have gone before, so too has the daughter of Australia's world-renowned Crocodile Hunter and wildlife warrior, Steve Irwin.

Bindi's appearance was historic for the 99-year-old NPC, situated a block away from the White House.

"I'm sure she is the youngest to address the NPC," club president Jerry Zremski said today.

Bindi, who took turns at the lectern with her mother, Terri, calling on the world to make animal conservation a priority, introduced herself at the podium, saying: "G'day. I'm Bindi Irwin."

In her speech, which was televised live on US TV news network CNN, Bindi said she would continue the conservation work of her dad.

"It is very sad that in my lifetime a lot of wildlife could disappear," Bindi told the 100 or so guests in the NPC's ballroom and millions more on TV.

Speaking with the same poise she had in delivering her father's eulogy at Australia Zoo, she went on: "We could lose tigers and gorillas and even my favourite, koalas.

"We need to help my daddy's work and make this world a perfect place for animals."

Terri also told the audience the importance of ensuring her husband's work did not end with his death, but she did break down in tears as she recalled Steve's love for Bindi and three-year-old son, Bob.

"As a dad, he was the best," Terri said as she tried to compose herself.

"If he could be remembered for one thing, and one thing only, it should be that he was the best Dad."

The Irwins, who over the past week have appeared on TV talkshows in the US such as Dave Letterman, Ellen Degeneres and Larry King, have been criticised for keeping such a high-profile just five months after Steve's death.

Terri told how she sat down with Bindi and asked her what she wanted to do and Bindi said she wanted to continue her father's work.

"I think grief is a road every individual travels in their own way," Terri said.

The Irwin's life before Steve's death was in the media spotlight spreading the animal conservation message so "it seemed to be familiar with us all".

"It's like that fishing trip every weekend or going surfing with your dad - whatever that was special in your family," Terri said.

"For some people it's hard for them to do it again.

"For some people they really need to do it again."

Bindi's singing and dancing stage show, which made its international debut in Los Angeles last week and will be performed in New York tomorrow, was also helping Bindi to deal with life without her father.

"Bindi said to me 'It really felt like I belonged there and I was home'," Terri, recalling her daughter's reaction to being on stage in LA, said.

Bindi also showed she could handle tricky questions just like the experienced politicians who had graced the NPC before her.

Frankie, an eight-year-old American boy sitting in the audience, asked her if he could one day work at Australia Zoo.

"Of course, we'll take you in if you love wildlife," Bindi replied.

Then came the toughest question of the day.

Zremski, who presented Bindi with a fluffy NPC Panda soft toy at the end of her speech, asked her: "You have been doing all of these interviews, how do reporters compare to poisonous snakes?

"OK, I don't want to offend anyone," Bindi answered. "I think I like poisonous snakes best."

Bindi charms press club in Washington

Bindi Irwin joined one of the world's most exclusive clubs when she delivered a speech to the National Press Club (NPC) in Washington DC.

"G'day. I'm Bindi Irwin," the eight-year-old enthusiastically said as she walked up to the podium.

The NPC is one of the most sought after public speaking engagements, with world leaders such as Winston Churchill, Indira Gandhi, Charles deGaulle and a who's who of kings, queens and princes invited to give addresses in the past.

Bindi, who is in the US to perform concerts with The Wiggles, promote Australia as a tourist destination and participate in the G'Day USA festival, was joined by her mother, Terri, at the podium.

Bindi used her address, which was beamed live in the US on CNN, to continue the animal conservation message of her father Steve "The Crocodile Hunter" Irwin, who was killed by a stingray on Queensland's Great Barrier Reef last year.

"I don't want to grow up in a world without wildlife," Bindi said to the 100 or so guests in the NPC's ballroom.

"We must do something now to help save their homes.

" We have to stop cutting down forests and polluting our oceans and rivers."

"... My daddy was a wildlife warrior and I'm going to continue his work."

Wife, daughter of 'Crocodile Hunter' discuss life on wild side

Bindi Irwin is ready to continue her famous father's work spreading the wonder of wildlife.

"I'm going to become a wildlife warrior just like he was," eight-year-old Bindi, son of the late Steve Irwin, told an audience Friday at Washington's National Press Club. Five months after Steve Irwin was killed by a stingray, Bindi and her mother Terri are touring the United States to promote Bindi's upcoming television series.

Asked Friday if the attention is too much too soon, Terri said Bindi told her after Steve's death she wanted to go back to filming wildlife shows as soon as possible.

"Grief is a road that each individual travels in their own way," Terri said, her daughter by her side.

"For us to get right back up and be able to say that Steve's work counted for something" has been a help to the Irwin family and others.

Steve Irwin was killed in September after a stingray's barb stabbed him in the chest during the filming of a documentary. Authorities have handed over the video of Irwin's death to his family; Terri has said the family destroyed the footage.

As proof of her commitment to her father's work, Bindi cheerfully described some of the world's most ferocious animals as "so sweet and gentle," praising crocodiles as "such great mothers" and snakes as "just gorgeous."

Bindi, who has appeared on several entertainment and news shows while in the United States, was asked how she compared snakes and reporters.

"I really think I like poisonous snakes," she answered, grinning for the dozens of assembled cameras and journalists.

Bewitching Bindi
By Elaine Ford. Posted: Sunday, January 21 2007 .

Tiny "wildlife warrior" Bindi Irwin is continuing to charm the US media during her and mum Terri's whirlwind tour of America to promote Australian tourism.

The eight-year-old's latest public appearance might've made her the youngest person to give a speech to the prestigious National Press Club, which was also televised live across America.

Bindi's in good company with the gig, where previous speakers in the organisation's 99-year history including Sir Winston Churchill, Indira Gandhi and Nelson Mandela.

Wearing the trademark khaki outfit just like her conservationist dad, Steve - who was tragically killed just four months ago - Bindi spoke passionately of her vow to continue his work.

"It is very sad that in my lifetime, a lot of wildlife could disappear. We could lose tigers and gorillas and even my favourite koalas. We need to help my daddy's work and make this world a perfect place for animals."
Mum Terri also took a turn at the podium, with her tears flowing when speaking of Steve's love and bond with their two kids.

"If he could be remembered for one thing and one thing only, it should be that he was the best Dad."
