Rock star Aussie minister off-key on whales: Japanese official

SYDNEY (AFP) - In the days when Australia's environment minister was a rock star and Japan's whaling chief was a student, they sang from the same songbook -- but not any more.

Japan accused of vote buying ahead of whaling meeting

Australia will today call on Japan to end its controversial whale hunts in the Antarctic at a meeting of the International Whaling Commission in London, as condemnation mounts over Tokyo's attempts to build a pro-whaling majority ahead of the commission's main conference this summer.

Japanese delegates, meanwhile, are expected to push for international action against conservation groups attempting to disrupt the annual culls.

Australia to go in hard at meeting on whaling

THE Rudd Government is taking its hardline campaign against whaling to a special meeting of the International Whaling Commission, despite concerns it could be left isolated.

The London meeting that opened yesterday was called to build trust between hostile pro- and anti-whaling sides of the 78-nation whaling commission.

I just saw that last bit on the news a few mins ago. It's sickening to think what lenghts people will go to to continue doing such a horrible act. Why can't they get that noone wants them to be whaling anymore. But then again if people would stop buying the products then there would be no need for to do it. These beautiful creatures need to be left alone!

Dr Evil's guide to whaling 'research'

AN official scientific review of Japan's bizarre experiments with test-tube minke babies and attempts at cross-breeding cows with whales has exploded the claim whale slaughter is "research".

Scientists have analysed the 43 research papers produced by Japan after 18 years of killing whales and concluded they are useless, strange and esoteric.

Australia gathers proof on Japan's whaling bribes
THE Australian Government has gained fresh ammunition in its battle to stop "scientific" whaling, exposing Japanese vote-buying at the International Whaling Commission.

One of the whaler's key Pacific supporters, the Solomon Islands, has frankly admitted to Australia that Japanese interests normally finance its trips to the whaling commission, which is finely balanced between pro and anti-whaling groups.

Australia wins support for whale plan

AUSTRALIA has drummed up international support for its bid to stop Japanese whaling, with new rules protecting the mammals.

A five-strong Australian delegation to the International Whaling Commission's (IWC) three-day forum called for special permits to come under IWC scrutiny to prevent Japan killing whales in the name of science.

They also urged the forum to introduce fresh conservation plans to combat issues such as climate change, and internationally co-ordinated research programs aimed at closing "knowledge gaps" about the mammals.

We saved 500 whales - Sea Shepherd

ANTI-WHALING protesters returning from the Southern Ocean say they have likely saved more than 500 whales this season.

The protest ship, Sea Shepherd's Steve Irwin, began the trip back to Melbourne overnight after running low on fuel and should arrive on Saturday, said the vessel's captain Paul Watson.

He said this year's protest had been successful for the whales, with Japan probably taking less than half its stated quota of 935 minke and 50 endangered fin whales.

Anti-whalers return, call trip a success

Sea Shepherd's anti-whaling ship, the Steve Irwin, arrived back in Melbourne after 85 days at sea, trumpeting Japan's failure to meet the quota of whales it wanted to catch this year.

The captain Paul Watson, founder and president of conservation group, said the ship's effort to prevent Japanese whaling had gone beyond its original expectations.

"They've taken only 461 whales - that's less than half the quota they wanted to take," Mr Watson said.

Let's pray that this time next year, there will be no Whale Hunters to worry about!
