Japan falls short of whaling target
TOKYO - Violent clashes with animal rights groups and fewer whale sightings forced Japan's whaling fleet to head home from the Antarctic with only 55 percent of its 985-whale hunting target, the government said Monday.

Anti-whaling campaign hailed a success

Conservation groups involved in recent anti-whaling action in the Southern Ocean have hailed their efforts as a success, as the Japanese whaling season comes to an end.

The Nisshin Maru Japanese whaling ship was expected to return to Tokyo about 7.30am (AEDT) on Tuesday, after four or five months at sea.

International environmental activists Greenpeace spent 15 days chasing the Nisshin Maru across the ocean, while another group, the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, also interfered with the whalers' efforts over several months.

he Whale's Navy

In 1986, the International Whaling Commission (IWC) enacted a moratorium on all commercial whaling. Since then, three nations – Iceland, Norway, and Japan – have brutally slaughtered over 25,000 whales under the guise of scientific research and for commercial purposes. The IWC does not have the capacity to enforce the moratorium. Sea Shepherd, guided by the United Nations World Charter for Nature, is the only organization whose mission is to enforce these international conservation regulations on the high seas.

Sea Shepherd flagship in Brisbane for major refit

The Steve Irwin ship quietly slipped into Brisbane late last month without the usual fanfare that accompanies the ship's movements when it is on anti-whaling duties.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS), which owns the Steve Irwin, says the ship is undergoing a major refit ahead of their next campaign in Antarctica later this year.

Sea Shepherd Issues Arrest Order for the Japanese Whaling Fleet

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has drawn up an arrest warrant for the Japanese whaling fleet.

“We intend to intervene against the continued illegal whaling activities of the Japanese fleet in the Antarctic Whale Sanctuary,” said Captain Paul Watson. “We intend to stop the killing of endangered species of whales in the Sanctuary, whales that are being killed in violation of the global moratorium on whaling. We intend to enforce the orders of the Australian Federal Court that has banned Japanese whalers from killing whales in the waters of the Australian Antarctic Territory. Our objective is to arrest the Nisshin Maru and its fleet of hunter killer boats.”
