Meet the whales' human shield

IT'S -2C, but when you account for the biting wind the temperature plummets to -10C.

You are in a 2m-long rubber dinghy in the middle of the Southern Ocean, buffeted by an endless stream of icy sea water. It knocks you off your feet.

You've been out here braving the seas and bitter cold for four hours - oh, and there's a giant harpoon pointed at you.

It's not a job for the faint of heart.

Paul Watson, Captain of the Sea Shephard...is one of my heros!

Speaking by satellite phone to The Australian yesterday, Paul Watson, the skipper of the Sea Shepherd pursuit ship Steve Irwin, vowed to put the Japanese whalers out of action.

While declining to reveal what tactics he would use against the Japanese, Mr Watson said he had "no problems causing damage to their equipment".

Activists chase whalers, split on tactics

ANTI-whaling activists say they have chased the flagship of Japan's whaling fleet from hunting grounds near Antarctica, but are divided over protest action if the Japanese return to resume the yearly slaughter.

The most important thing here is that they both agree that the Whalers must be stopped

Back off, whaling protest warned

ANTI-WHALING activists chasing the Japanese fleet in the Southern Ocean have been warned against illegal and dangerous interference.

Greenpeace protest ship Esperanza is in pursuit of the main hunting vessel, Nisshin Maru, after locating the fleet of six ships on Saturday.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is not far behind aboard its vessel, the Steve Irwin.

Court to rule whaling case legal order

THE Federal Government's attempt to intensify pressure on Japanese whaling faces a legal test as the whalers keep running from environmentalists in the Southern Ocean.

A decision is expected today in a long-running Federal Court case seeking an injunction against Japan's whaling inside the Australian Whale Sanctuary in Antarctica.

Ask Gorton's to Do More for Whales

Gorton's is a North American subsidiary of Nippon Suisan, one of Japan’s three largest seafood companies.

In 2006, a coalition of environmental and animal protection groups including Humane Society International demanded that Nippon Suisan and the other seafood companies shut down their whaling fleet, cease killing whales, and stop selling whale products.
