News Releases Sea Shepherd Ship the Steve Irwin Returns to Melbourne to Refuel And Re-Provision The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society’s ship Steve Irwin will be returning to Melbourne and is estimated to arrive at Victoria docklands, wharf 3 around 1400 Hours on February 2nd. It appears that one of the objectives that Sea Shepherd had set has been reached. “There have been no reports from the Oceanic Viking of whales being killed to date. This means that our goal of seeing that whaling was halted until the end of January has been reached,” said Captain Watson. “Our next objective is to shut down Japanese whaling operations for another three weeks and I think we can do it.” http://seashepherd.org/news/media_080131_2.html |

ENVIRONMENT
Sea Shepherd plans return trip to disrupt Japanese whalers Thursday, January 31, 2008 at 16:07 EST SYDNEY — The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, a U.S.-based anti-whaling group, confirmed Thursday it plans to return to the Southern Ocean and disrupt the remainder of the Japanese whaling season. The Sea Shepherd vessel Steve Irwin was forced to leave Antarctic waters this week after it began to run low on fuel and is now heading towards Melbourne, Australia. But Sea Shepherd leader Paul Watson said he plans to turn the ship around within 10 days of arriving in Melbourne. "This is a retreat for supplies only. We have not surrendered the sanctuary to the whale killers. We will be back as soon as possible," Watson said. Sea Shepherd needs to raise an extra $200,000 to meet the costs of returning to the Antarctic, something Watson said he is now confident can be done. New crew members are already flying to Melbourne from around the world to relieve volunteers on board the Steve Irwin, and spare parts have been ordered for the ship, he said. WooHoo!!!!!!! |

Australian conservation groups have joined a global grassroots campaign to boycott Japanese products Friday in the latest bid to pressure Japan to stop whaling. Anti-whaling activists from Australia's east coast, the Byron Whale Action Group and Surfers for Cetaceans, hand-delivered a letter to the Japanese consulate in Brisbane, informing Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo ***uda of the boycott and demanding an end to whaling in the name of research.
The Brisbane offices of Sony Australia Ltd, Mitsubishi Motors Australia Ltd and Japan Airlines Corp also received similar messages from the groups. Byron Whale Action Group spokesman Dean Jefferys said the Australian boycott is part of a global grassroots campaign that has been coordinated over Internet websites such as MySpace and YouTube. Other conservation groups taking part include the U.S.-based Save the Whales and Britain's Cetacea Defence. |

Anti-whaling ship docks in Hobart
Greenpeace has ruled out co-operating with another anti-whaling group, Sea Shepherd, to better hinder Japan's whaling program in the Southern Ocean. The Greenpeace ship, Esperanza, docked at Hobart last night after two months pursuing the Japanese whaling fleet. Sea Shepherd's ship, Steve Irwin, returned to Melbourne last week to refuel. Greenpeace's expedition leader, Karli Thomas, says they remain opposed to the more confrontational tactics employed by Sea Shepherd. However she says it's difficult each time they leave the whaling fleet. "When it comes to the point that we do have to turn around and head north again it is a difficult time but I mean it's dictated by the amount of fuel that we have," Ms thomas said. "So now we're back the expedition itself is finished but that's only one part of what we're doing and we're now looking forward to continuing the public work in Japan," she said. |
