Smiler This morning I received a thank you note (for the letter and gift I sent to Terri,Bindi and Robert for christmas last year) from Jannice Nielsen, the thank you note from Jannice Nielsen is on behalf of Terri and Bindi and Robert its a really nice message and I received a picture of the Irwin family with a copy of Steve and Terri's autographs.I love the picture of the Irwin family its a lovely picture and I will treasure the picture forever.Even though I don't know the Irwin family personally they are special to me cos they love animals and they seem like really nice/genuie people. If there were more people like the Irwin family the world would be a nicer place for wildlife around the world.I hope I get to meet Terri,Bindi and Robert (I've booked my airfare ticket to Brisbane I'm soo excited!!!!) when I visit Australia Zoo in June (only 5 months to go yay,I can't wait to visit Australia Zoo for the first time!!!) meeting them would a dream come true.Terri and Bindi are great role models, they are my Idols and they always will be.

No SteveIrwinForeverInMyHeart I haven't been fortunate to go yet, but I will do one day, I hope.
If things were different at home my husband and I would love to emigrate to Australia, but our family mean so much to us here so it's not the right time at the moment, one day maybe, who knows.
A holiday would be excellent, although very expensive for a family. Will have to start saving now, or maybe win the lottery, now that would be nice...

Irwin's song will be hard - Williamson

24Jan07

COUNTRY music veteran John Williamson says performing Steve Irwin's favourite song will be the hardest part of his Australia Day gig at the Irwin family-owned wildlife park.

The singer-songwriter's show this Friday will mark his return to Australia Zoo's Crocoseum on Queensland's Sunshine Coast following his involvement in Steve Irwin's public memorial service last year.

Williamson today described his 75-minute stint as a "celebration of Australia Day and Steve", featuring a swag of melodies including new tribute song Wildlife Warriors: It's Time and Steve's all-time favourite True Blue.

He said the show would be his third Australia Day performance at the Crocoseum and, sadly, the first since Steve Irwin was fatally pierced in the chest by a stingray's barb in waters off far north Queensland in September last year.

Terri and Bindi Irwin won't be making an appearance as they are holidaying in the United States following their ambassadorial roles in the G'Day USA: Australia Week promotion.

"It will be like an echo of the memorial, I think," Williamson told AAP.

"When I sing True Blue I'm sure there's going to be tears everywhere again and I'll throw his name into the song again like I used to do when he was there - he was such a good Aussie.

"He was always there for Australia Day and we always had a great yarn afterwards - he combined his show with my performance and we'd do it together, he was the ringmaster.

"True Blue - that will be the toughest part of the show when I do it towards the end."

He said he would also perform a song apparently played at the family's private ceremony for Steve, titled A Bushman Can't Survive, as well as Old Man Emu, which the Croc Hunter once recorded with The Wiggles.

"I promised Terri that I'll do Australia Day as long as she wants me to," he said.

"For me to perform at the zoo suits me fine because whenever anyone asks what is Australia Day about or what's Australia about, as far as I'm concerned we're not a great country without the nature."

He said he wrote Wildlife Warriors: It's time on the evening of Steve's memorial service to encourage Australians to "stand up" and protect native bushland.

Coast kids take time out from illness to enjoy a day at the zoo

IT was the elephants rather than the crocodiles that were the centre of attention at Australia Zoo yesterday.

Thanks to the Starlight Foundation, 20 families from the Coast and Brisbane were treated to a day at the zoo, providing a much-needed break from the stress of a child’s illness.

As part of the escape, the kids were given the opportunity to hand feed the zoo’s three Asian elephants – Bimbo, Sabu and Siam.

Nathan Rasmussen and James Hempenstall, both 13, got up close and personal with the big ladies.

James said that while he had enjoyed spending the day with his friends checking out the different animals, the elephants were his favourite.

“When they grab the food off you, it’s a funny feeling,” he said. “I’ve just really enjoyed today.”
While Nathan was more of a reptile fan – snakes in particular – he said hand-feeding the elephants was a highlight.

“It felt weird – you’ve got to get used to it because they sometimes try to eat your hand,” he laughed.

Nathan’s mum, Roz, said the Starlight Escape allowed her family to spend time together, away from the pressures of living with illness.

“Today is such a great opportunity for us to be together as a family. To be associated with Starlight and able to do this sort of thing is an opportunity that we wouldn’t be able to do on our own.”

With Nathan in a wheelchair, it was often difficult for the family to enjoy time together. “Someone has to stay at home with him while the others go and enjoy themselves – we are separated a lot,’’ she said.

Starlight Foundation’s Katrina Witham said the focus was on providing positive distractions for sick kids.

“When a child is ill all we want to do is help them have fun and think about anything else other than their illness.

“It often can be very stressful on the family so that’s why Starlight likes to take everyone out just to have a great day and forget about all their worries.”

"Visiting" the Zoo is important for me. I love to get the updates on what is happening...I love reading and learning new things... I love the excitement and wonder it brings! There are so many links to go to. The Zoo is a great place to be.... and until the day comes that I can go... the website allows me all those opportunities. Look around and you know and see Steve's presence... you see what his parents and he have built.. you see what they are giving to everyone. The Australia Zoo is Steve's heart and soul... He will always be there.
