Blue smoke is usually an idication of oil burning.

After a 'blue smoke' session, remove the spark plugs and examine them. Are they wet and black?
If so, you have an oil leak into the combustion chamber. This can be from the head gasket, valve seals, even inlet manifold gasket if the oil channel runs through it (unlikely on a six).

What mileage has the engine done? Do you thrash it a lot? If high mileage then other causes can be excessive piston movement or the oil control rings need replacing. This is a major overhaul or recon job.

If the engine is getting tired but the control rings are o.k. then it could be just excessive piston blow-by causing the oil in the sump to get washed around more and possibly pushing it up into the sump breather (vent) pipe going to the inlet manifold. This can pump pure oil into the inlet if you have a blockage elsewhere in the oil system. Easy way to verify piston wear is to start the engine, remove the oil filler cap a put your hand over the filler neck. On a good engine you should hardly feel any air movement or pressure. If the engine is worn, you will feel air pressure, sometimes it's enough so you can't seal your hand over the filler neck.

If the oil is coming up through the breather (vent) pipe, a quick fix is to disconnect the pipe from the inlet and vent it to atmosphere via a collection bottle (to catch any liquid oil), and then plug the hole in the inlet. If you live in one of the more 'picky' states regarding emissions you shouldn't do this as the authorities take a bit of a dim view on oil-smoke emission.

Hope this has helped.
