I love the show but I've gotta agree with Fin and Camden, the cars are downright dangerous. The spacers not only increase wear but have an adverse effect on handling and some of the suspension mods mean that the geometry is all skewed. (The jag was a prime example) The irony is that you can easily buy springs at the right tension and specify the length rather than cut down a set. Alternatively, springs are wound by heating and there are specialists who will rewind or retense springs.

I have no quarrel with either Leepu or Bernie. I love the old school 'special' type of approach to metalwork. I've built kit cars in this way but you've got to be careful if this is going to be a product that someone is going to buy.

With regard to SJM motors, congratulations on buying a car! I know I'm moaning, but I'd still buy one. However, I think there is one problem in particular that you might need to address: the car will need an SVA if you want to make it legal,as its chassis has undergone radical alterations. Just ask anyone who has built a Banham!!! (I have, I know - Your V5 won't be valid if it still still says the name, make and model of the donor car.)

WELL FOLKS WE ALL WOULD APPEAR TO KNOW SO MUCH ABOUT MY CAR I THINK I SHOULD KEEP MY MOUTH SHUT, SOME OF YOU GUYS HAVE TROUBLE SPELLING YET KNOW SO MUCH ABOUT MATERIAL STRENGTH, DESIGN, JAGUARS IN GENERAL AND EVEN THE LAW.
THE TIGER CAR DOES NOT NEED AN SVA TEST AS IT IS STILL JUST A XJS LIKE ANY OTHER, IT HAS NOT HAD ANY MODS THAT CHANGE THE DYNAMICS OF THE CAR OR INDEED IT DOESNT NOW!!.
AS FOR THE COMMENTS ON HOW IT DRIVES I SUGGEST YOU ALL SAY VERY LITTLE UNLESS OF COURSE YOU HAVE DRIVEN THE CAR BEFORE ME, AGAIN CHAPS I THINK WE ARE ALL MISSING THE POINT HERE, THIS IS NOT A MONDEO OR A PASSAT, IT IS SIMPLY A SHOW CAR AND THATS IT.

Wooah! Let's not make this personal. The forum is just for people to air their views. I, like others, believe that the suspension modifications coupled with the spacers leads to an unstable and potentially dangerous ride.( I remember serious incidents with racing Novas that didn't observe the obligatory 49mm offset) My years building kit cars, race cars and restoring classics lets me have this opinion with some authority. To attack people on grounds of their spelling is not what this forum is for.

With regards to SVA, I still believe that you will need one as I have had to undergo this process for heavily bodily modified cars before. (The roofline of the jag has been cut and radically altered, therefore changing the structural integrity of a monocoque) I know that this is definitely the case for Crayford style conversions. Rather than ask me, check with the DVLA. If not, then your insurance won't be valid. It is not meant to insult or take away from your car. Frowner

ive got to agree .These cars may look great(a matter of opinion) But how anyone can say they are safe is beyond me . as previously mentioned the extra loads put on wheel bearings / stub axles has not been calculated. to increase a vehicles track by that amountwould require a complete rethink. the spacers may well be extremely well made and of very good material but as previously mentioned it is not these that are going to fail. if any of these cars were involved in an accident im sure the insurance would be void.unless of course they have been inspected by an independant motor vehicle engineer and all the modifications approved by the insurance company. anyway thats my oppinion. great tv show cars but not great road cars.

Have checked with an old friend at VOSA Leighton Buzzard. Given the fact that the roof was removed and then re-welded, that constitutes radical chassis modification as the car is indeed a monocoque Therefore, the car requires an SVA unless you intend for it not to be registered on the road. Don't want to make waves for you and I have no doubt that it would pass with flying colours, but you will need one.

The situation would be different if the car were, say, a beetle which has an independent chassis. I wonder if the owner of the Sumo that is for sale on e-bay has it registered properly.

To be honest i own whats been voted as 5 time best civic coupe in the UK.
I personally think that Chop Shop is a disgrace. Leepu is an absolute butcher and hasnt got a feckin clue what he's doing and how in hell can they DA, fill, rub prime and prep a car in a day?? not a prayer.
They supposidly paint a car and take it to a show the same day, RUBBISH the paint wouldnt of cured properly for a start.
The paint-shop seem good but the rest is a joke.

Overhaulin' is a proper programme, decent jobs aswell.

Just seen the latest one! I love the programme but that car was lethal - I just hate to think what is going to happen to those front hubs with that negative camber. That can only increase when the suspension is under load. I know, I know, its only a show car but bear in mind that one day that might be coming a long the road in the opposite direction to you. Lets hope its as safe as they say.

Hi Guys,

Great show, not too sure how much of it I believe (paint a car in a day??) I would love someone to tell me how that Mk3 Fiesta handles with the front camber like that, and that engine conversion could have been so much easier (aka RS1800, but 2 Litre). Also the point about the wheel spacers is more about how far the bearing is from the centre line of the tyre surely??

Is it me or does anyone else think that they could do something more special with the engines and mods that they do. I mean come on, a couple of bolt on performance items that don't make much difference anyway??

Great looking cars in the end and the guys work really hard, so mustn't loose sight of that.

This can't be the 'Bernie' surely???? If it is then welcome buddy. (Though I doubt it) I thought this was a place where we engaged in lively discussion about mechanics, not slate one another for our poor spelling. Since when did being able to spell mean you could repair a car? (Nor indeed, our multi line, multiple apostrophe single sentences! Just kidding! Wink)He who casts the first stone and all that...

Absolutely brilliant viewing, I enjoyed it so much…

Though I was sorry to see the upset re: fire at garage.

Last month I was going to cancel my TV subscription, which is through Virgin Media, until I saw the trailer for chop shop. I had previously seen Bangla Bangers and thought that was some of the best TV I had ever seen…So I kept the virgin media package going just for chop shop, and I am not disappointed!

I demand discovery channel plan for another series of Leepu & Bernie! Or I'll cancel my subscription!

Keep going Bernie & Leepu!!!

Really? Perhaps then you should reread your post and correct the multitude of spelling/grammar mistakes you've made. You write like a 9 year old and certainly not like someone who has been around for over 40 years! It's a bit too difficult to take you seriously I'm afraid!
