S.S. crew fires a line rifle and throw signal flares at police dingy. Petrol was poured into the water around the dingies and flares were used in what was preceived by the police to be an attempt to set the petrol on fire.

1986: The S.S. claims responsbility for the sinking of two Icelandic veseels and damage performed against an Icelandic whaling station.

1988: Paul Watson demands to be taken into custody in Iceland for the sinking which took place in 1986. He later recants his confession.

1991: A U.S. fisherman reports his vessel being rammed by an S.S. vessel.

1992: The S.S. makes three failed attempts at ramming Costa Rica fishing vessels.

1993: Paul Watson, captaining the S.S. vessel "Edward Abby", orders his crew to open fire on a Japanese fishing veseel. The crew refuses. The encounter can be seen in the 1993 documentary "Ocean Rider - Defenders of the Wild".

1993: The S.S. claims to have sunk 8 vessels and rammed and/or damaged 6 others.

1997: Paul Watson convicted in absentia in Norway and imprisoned in Netherlands for scuttling of a whaling vessel and ramming of a Norweigan coast guard vessel.

2002: Arrest warrent issued in Costa Rica for Paul Watson for attempted murder and destruction or property resulting from an altercation with a Costa Rican fishing vessel.

Once he got to Norway they let him go. Perhaps they didn't want him appealing the decision and introducing his side of the case. I wonder why? Paul Watson has been hoping for a trial to show all his evidence.

The attempted murder charges concerned the following:

April - May 2002: The Ocean Warrior catches the Costa Rican longliner Varadero I poaching off the coast of Guatemala. Captain Watson contacts the Guatemalan authorities and asks for advice. He is given permission to escort the poacher into San Jose, Guatemala. The longliner is ordered to pull in over twenty miles of long line and to release any sharks and fish on the hooks. The Varadero I agrees to comply but attempts to flee. The Ocean Warrior deploys fire hoses to force the poacher to comply. The Varadero I accidentally strikes the hull of the Ocean Warrior causing some damage to the poacher and none to the Ocean Warrior. The next morning, the Ocean Warrior is escorting the Varadero I when the Port Captain of San Jose informed Captain Watson that he would be arresting the Ocean Warrior for using force against the Varadero I. The owner of the Costa Rican vessel had bribed the San Jose Port Captain. Captain Watson releases the Varadero I and proceeds on to Costa Rica. When the Ocean Warrior arrives in Costa Rica, Captain Watson is charged with attempted murder and destruction of property based on accusations from the crew of the Varadero I. Captain Watson presents video evidence of the confrontation with the Varadero I to prove that there had been no violence directed at the crew of the poacher and that the Ocean Warrior had been acting on instructions from the Guatemalan government. The charges are dropped and Captain Watson is released. The Ocean Warrior then proceeds to Cocos Island National Park to deliver a donation of a generator, a radar surveillance system, and other equipment to the park rangers. Ten days later the Ocean Warrior returns to the mainland to discover that another prosecutor and another judge have reopened the case after pressure comes from the Costa Rican fishing industry. There are no charges because of insufficient evidence but the court orders that Captain Watson be arrested and held indefinitely without bail until a determination on charges could be made. Captain Watson replies that he will not comply with any arrest order unless there were official charges. Captain Watson then eludes the police and returns to his ship and departs Costa Rican waters bound for Panama City.

The charges were re-opened by a corrupt judge and prosecutor who were obviusly paid off by the Costa Rican fishing industry. The evidence provided on the initial investigation clearly showed the Varadero was poaching in Guatemala's EEZ.

I find it interesting that the bail was put up by Farley Mowat on behalf of the two SSCS crew. The SSCS crew were then deported permanently. Oh yeah, the SSCS members were not intervening in the seal hunt, only documenting it. Isn't that what you want them to do in the southern ocean? Trying to have it both ways?

Of course he's going to get charged with SOMETHING. I mean those countries don't like him interfering with their whaling and what not. So yeah, they'll figure out some way to try to charge him. No surprise there really.

I mean, they've never killed anyone so I mean, they can't really be violent can they? How is something that violent if there is no bloodshed?

So yeah, I don't really have much of a problem with them....I don't like violence but I don't find that stuff to be all that violent really. The whalers throw stuff at them too anyway.

Anyway, I see the charges and know they're probably real but eh, it makes sense that they'd try to charge the crew with something.
