I remember seeing an advert quite a while ago where a guy is biking along the road, he then disappears into a puddle, only to reappear a few seconds later soaking wet.

The myth being that you can bike yourself out of water that is deeper than yourself.

I don't think its possible as you wouldn't have enough traction to overcome the resistance of the water. I don't think you would float though, as if you hold on to the bike you are 20kg/40lb heavier.

I would actually like to see this one. I dont think it would be possible to peddle through water. You would have to strap yourself to the bike but you would probably still float a bit.

Another chance to get Adam into his wet suit.

in wales there is a sport where they cycle completely through a 10 meter puddle almost as deep as a person but the bikes are weighted down.

Yeah, if you modify the bikes, I'm sure this is possible. In fresh water, a person can sink pretty quickly so I don't think there'd be a problem with floating to the surface and I'm sure the same would be true of a metal frame bike?

Do you think that you can bike out of the water though?

If you can sink then yea sure you can probably bike forwards because your own buoyancy pulls you upwards keeping the bike upright.

I don't think you would be able to get enough traction to pull you out of the water though, and certainly not with enough momentum to keep you upright.
