Hello.

I have heard that another way to prevent a normal handgranade from killing you and the people around you is to take your army helmet and put over the granade, because the helmet will stop the sharpnel from killing you. An alternative is to also hold the helmet in place.

If a grenade exploded underneath a standard helmet with nothing to hold it down, it would fly up into the air like a rocket & become a quite deadly missile in its own right & the shrapnel will be able to do what it always does to human bodies in the vicinity.

Holding it down would take some doing - it would require all the weight of a very large body, the shrapnel would punch right through the helmet & if that large body had no protection there would be significant damage to that body, the protection of other bodies in the area would be due to the first body absorbing the impetus of the shrapnel - slowing it down, possibly stopping it altogether.
