Will an ordinary thermometer really explode if it is placed in a place which the temperature is much higher exceeding the given limit?

The weakest part will fail, probably with a faint "pop". There might be a bit of a fizz as the liquid evaporates. Nothing like the mayhem imagined by scriptwriters. Unless the thermometer is the size of an Atlas rocket.
