Dear mythbusters, I gotta tell you I'm a big fan, I have a myth which I don't really know if has been tried before but anyway. At home we all smoke, and whenever there's a lot of smoke around my mum always tells us to light a candle so it will absorb or neutralize the smoke and the odor, is that true??????

a candle would definately not absorb smoke, and unless its scented, it wont do anything for the odour.

better of ditching the filthy habbit.

I think there was one episode where the mythbusters tested amongst other things lighting and blowing out a match as a way to remove toilet smells. They concluded it only covered the smells slightly rather than remove them.

Anyway, smoke consists of tiny particles of already burnt material. I don't think a candle will do anything to those particles, and even if it did, one candle is could not possibly be enough to get most of the smoke particles in a room.

Lighting a fire in a fireplace will work however. This is not due to the fire directly, but simply due to the ventilation effect of the hot air going up the chimney and hence sucking fresh air into the room.
